Sometime around 300 A.D., Roman Emperor Diocletian built his retirement palace on one of the loveliest spots on the Adriatic Sea. Today his palace has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the heart of Split, the city that grew up around it. Ondanks de ligging in de Atlantische Oceaan heeft Arrecife een uitgesproken mediterrane sfeer met promenades aan de kust omzoomd met palmbomen. De getijdelagune El Charco is een populaire plek om te wandelen en voor het fotograferen van traditionele vissersboten die voor anker liggen. Elke zaterdag verschijnt er een markt met voedsel en ambachtelijke werken rond de lagune en de kerk van San Ginés; en kleine tapasbars verwelkomen hun bezoekers elke dag van de week.

Een bezoek aan het ongerepte La Palma, het meest noordelijke en westelijke eiland van de Canarische eilanden, lijkt heel erg op een bezoek aan Jurassic Park. Prehistorische dichtbegroeide bossen met kringelende watervallen en kabbelende beekjes bedekken het noorden van de eiland, terwijl het zuiden droog en dor is met zinderende slapende vulkanen. De ruige kustlijn en de zandstranden liggen onder de hoge bergruggen van de acht kilometer brede Caldera de Taburiente. Het is geen wonder dat in 2002 het hele eiland werd geclassificeerd door UNESCO als biossfeerreservaat. Het ontdekken van de natuur moet prioriteit nummer 1 zijn bij het bezoeken van La Palma, maar het is onmogelijk om de cultuur van het eiland te begrijpen zonder een bezoek aan Santa Cruz, de tweede grootste stad en de enige haven van La Palma, te brengen. Zijn recht op erkenning, behalve dat het de geboorteplaats van de wereldberoemde schoenontwerper Manolo Blahnik is, is de koppeling van kleurrijke koloniale gebouwen met traditionele Canarische houten balkons.
