Surabaya is de op een na grootste stad van Indonesië en de hoofdstad van Java en staat bekend als de Stad der Helden dankzij de belangrijke rol die het gespeeld heeft om internationale aandacht te krijgen voor de revolutie in het jaar 1940. Die onafhankelijke geest is nog steeds voelbaar bij de internationale diverse bevolking van de wereldstad met bijna drie miljoen inwoners. Surabaya biedt plaats aan de enige synagoge van Indonesië en ook aan de grootste moskee van Oost-Java. En koloniale gebouwen staan op slechts een korte wandeling van moderne nieuwe winkelcentra. Bezoekers hebben veel te doen, of ze nu de vele artefacten in het Museum Mpu Tantular willen zien, in het huis van Sampoerna willen bekijken waar de kretek van Indonesië ontstaan zijn of het groene hart van de stad willen verkennen tijdens een boottocht door het mangrovebos van Wonorejo. In de Pasar Ampel lijkt het alsof u in een bazaar uit het Midden-Oosten rondloopt, waar de verkopers kruiden, kleverige zoete dadels en geïmporteerde tapijten aan de man proberen te brengen. Op Kenjeran Beach, in het midden van de stad, hebt u dan weer de kans om de verse vangst van de vissers te bekijken of een van de langste bruggen in Indonesië te bekijken. Het moeilijkste in Surabaya wordt dus duidelijk om te beslissen wat u allemaal wilt zien.

Voor de meeste bezoekers is de grootste sensatie bij de aankomst in Semarang de kans op een dagje naar de Borobudur, de boeddhistische tempel die door UNESCO tot werelderfgoed is uitgeroepen en teruggaat tot de 8e en 9e eeuw. Maar er is ook genoeg om u bezig te houden in en rond de stad zelf. Met meer dan 1 miljoen inwoners neemt Semarang een strategische plek in op Java’s noordkust en het is een van de interessantste havens in Zuidoost-Azië. De kleurrijke lappendeken van koloniale architectuur, Chinese tempels en opvallende moskeeën van de stad vertelt het verhaal van de diverse culturen die Semarang’s geschiedenis bepaalden, en ook van het heden. Breng wat tijd door met wandelen in de sfeervolle Outstadt, de oude Nederlandse wijk. Deze buurt staat vol oude Nederlandse magazijnen en stadswoningen, uit een tijd waarin Surabaya en Jakarta een van de belangrijkste havens van Nederlands-Indië waren om handel te drijven. Bijna een derde van de bevolking van de stad is tegenwoordig Chinees. U vindt er uitstekend Chinees eten en ook belangrijke historische locaties, zoals Gedung Batu, het oudste Chinese tempelcomplex aan de rand van de stad, die zeker een bezoek waard is.
