Until the mid-19th century, Japan lived in isolation, closed off from the rest of the world, and Yokohama was a mere fishing village. But in 1853, American naval officer Matthew Perry demanded the country open to foreign trade, and Yokohama was changed forever. The city quickly emerged as an international trading center, and while today it is often overshadowed by nearby Tokyo, it continues to be one of Japan’s liveliest, and most international, destinations. With its microbreweries and international restaurants, Yokohama has a decidedly different feel from many other Japanese cities.

From Yokohama, it’s a quick trip to peaceful Kamakura, home to Daibutsu, Japan’s second-largest bronze Buddha, and to the important Shinto shrine Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. Head to Hakone National Park on a clear day and you’ll be rewarded with picture-postcard views of majestic Mt. Fuji.

Tokyo is the largest city on earth and packed with some of the world’s best shops, museums and restaurants, big and small. While the bright neon lights and the bustle of contemporary Tokyo may be what comes to mind when you think of the city, there is another side. Tokyo’s historic gardens and neighborhoods of traditional homes on narrow lanes speak to a timeless Japan that has survived into the 21st century.

Most Japanese used to think of Aomori merely as the place you caught the ferry to when you were going to Hokkaido. By the time you’d gotten here, they figured, you were pretty much at the edge of the civilized world. The small Tsugaru Strait that separates Honshu from Hokkaido isn’t big—only about 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) at its narrowest point—but it’s ecologically important: Hokkaido has animals related to northern Asia, whereas Honshu’s are more closely related to southern Asia’s. The strait is also famous for sudden, very rough weather and for no shortage of shipwrecks. The city was flattened in World War II, so there isn’t much history left to see. Still, it’s a lovely area, not much congestion or development, and because the town is still the major gateway to Hokkaido, the city has money to spend on architecture and parks. Its setting on the edge of Mutsu Bay means you will often be surprised by lovely water views through the buildings. The old way of thinking of Aomori is over. Aomori may not be quite what most people think of when they plan a Japan trip, but it is what Japan thinks of when they consider where they got the new century right.

Het verafgelegen Hokkaido is zo legendarisch dat het voorkomt in een van Japans belangrijkste historische verhalen: Nadat hij een veldslag in 1189 had verloren, ontsnapte de held Minamoto Yoshitsune aan gevangenneming en onthoofding door naar Hokkaido te gaan (omdat niemand er voor voelde om hem zo ver te achtervolgen). Er is een versie van het verhaal waarin hij terugkeerde vanuit Hokkaido naar het vasteland en, als men de karakters van zijn naam anders leest, Gin Ke Ka werd – Genghis Khan.

Hokkaido is de enige plek op de grote eilanden van Japan waar een niet-Japanse cultuur redelijk intact overleeft als een identiteit, zo niet manier van leven. De Ainu waren hier het eerste, en zijn vrij gemakkelijk te herkennen; ze hebben een blekere huid en meer haar dan ethnische Japanners. En ze gaan nergens heen. In 1997 erkende de Japanse regering eindelijk het recht van de Ainu’s op hun eigen cultuur. Sakaiminato is home to Shigeru Mizuki, creator of GeGeGe no Kitaro (a character who’s everywhere in contemporary Japan), and gateway to the ancient region of Honshu, site of the famous “Black Castle.”

Situated at the southern tip of Japan, Kagoshima is the capital of the prefecture of the same name and famous for its dramatic views of Sakurajima, an active volcano that smolders across the bay. One of the most popular activities is taking a ferry to Sakurajima and hiking on the 100-year-old lava flow that is now a grassy peninsula. Kagoshima, however, offers much more than the volcano’s almost overwhelming beauty. The food scene provides opportunities to experience the area’s rich culinary culture and features dishes using locally caught fish and regional specialties, like satsuma a’ge (deep-fried fish cake) and shōchū, a traditional beverage made at more than 100 distilleries in Kagoshima alone. Although the city was officially founded in 1889, it has an even longer history that is reflected in the 17th-century gardens of Sengan-en. More recent events are covered at a museum dedicated to the kamikaze pilots who flew out of Kagoshima. Other popular attractions include the City Aquarium, the Museum of the Meiji Restoration with its exhibits exploring local history and the City Museum of Art with its collection that covers both local contemporary and older art. Het enige dat telt is het bedrijfsleven, en wat maakt het uit als de Hanshin Tigers, het plaatselijke honkbalteam, vaak de slechtste professionele atleten ter wereld zijn? Het is de thuisploeg. De bevolking van Osaka lacht harder, speelt harder en drinkt meer dan in Tokyo’s meeste decadente dromen. Osaka heeft zelfs een eigen dialect, dat door de rest van het land “vuil Japans” wordt genoemd, helemaal anders dan die van Kobe’en Kobe is een voorstad van Osaka.

Niets is oud in Osaka. De plaats werd plat gebombardeerd in de oorlog (en daarna weer in 1962 en 1989, door Godzilla). Tijdens de wederopbouw vergaten ze ruimte in te plannen voor parken en groene plekken, en de enorme hoeveelheid beton en staal kan overweldigend zijn.

Maar Osaka heeft haar attracties en interessante dingen om te doen. Sumoworstelaars wachten op treinen, stinkend naar chanko-nabe (een traditionele sumomaaltijd, puur energie en calorieën), en dagen de officiële spoorwegduwers uit om hen te duwen. Yakuza (Japanse gangsters) eigenen zichzelf treinwagons toe, maar als u met hen kunt omgaan, lijkt het alsof u onzichtbaar bent. Drukke markten, het visuele geluid van neon en non-stop actie in de winkelstraten bieden inzicht in de energie en ambitie van Osaka.

En als dat alles nog niet genoeg is, ligt Osaka ook nog op minder dan een uur afstand van sommige van de mooiste tempels, altaren en oude Japanse toeristische attracties in de wereld, duizend jaar Japanse geschiedenis, die liggen te wachten in de oude hoofdsteden Kyoto en Nara.
