Sometime around 300 A.D., Roman Emperor Diocletian built his retirement palace on one of the loveliest spots on the Adriatic Sea. Today his palace has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the heart of Split, the city that grew up around it. Split is now Croatia's second largest city, and much of it sits on a beautiful peninsula on the island of Ciovo, a jewel on the Dalmatian Coast. Many intriguing relics from the Roman, Greek colonial and Medieval periods can be found in Split's archaeological museum, which was founded in 1820, making it Croatia's oldest museum. One of the top outdoor attractions is the green oasis of Marjan Forest Park with its Split Zoo. There are also plenty of fine beaches nearby.

"Je hebt vast wel eens gehoord van Rome, Florence en Venetië, maar Trieste is net zo belangrijk en mooi. Deze stad, gelegen in het uiterste oosten van Italië, grenst aan Slovenië en stond ooit onder de controle van het Oostenrijks-Hongaarse rijk. In Triëst zie je nog steeds Weense koffiehuizen, heb je de mogelijkheid om goulash en misschien wel Sachertorte te proberen. Onder het Habsburgse rijk werd Triëst een prominente stad en badplaats voor notabelen als Sigmund Freud, Rainer Maria Rilke en James Joyce.-Verken de prachtige tuinen compleet met lotusbloemen en een vijver met zwanen bij het Miramare-kasteel. Het kasteel werd gebouwd voor Ferdinand Maximillian, de broer van de Oostenrijkse keizer Franz Joseph.-Bekijk de boog van Riccardo, die in 33 voor Christus door de Romeinen werd gebouwd en waarvan wordt aangenomen dat hij door de Engelse koning Richard is overgestoken op weg naar huis van de kruistochten.-Ga ondergronds bij de Grotta Gigante, de grootste grot ter wereld die openstaat voor toeristen. De belangrijkste grot is 351 voet hoog en 213 voet breed. Het werd ontdekt terwijl de stad op zoek was naar waterbronnen om een aquaduct te plannen.-Drink iets bij de Caffe San Marco. Triëst wordt beïnvloed door zijn Oostenrijkse erfgoed en staat bekend als de koffiehoofdstad van Italië. Dit café werd bezocht door James Joyce."
